Shaun Ranada is an MSc student in the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Sciences program at the University of Calgary under the supervision of Dr. Satish R Raj and Dr. Robert S Sheldon. Shaun completed a degree in Paramedicine (2015) and works as a Primary Care Paramedic. He also completed a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biological Sciences (2021) at the University of Calgary.
Shaun’s research interests encompass the pathophysiology, mechanisms and management of various autonomic disorders, including vasovagal syncope, initial orthostatic hypotension, and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).
He is studying the effects of an increased amount of inspired carbon dioxide (hypercapnia) on the hemodynamic, ventilatory and cerebrovascular responses of POTS patients. The primary aim of this study is to determine if higher CO2 levels can effectively lower heart rate and reduce symptoms in POTS patients. The results of this study will ultimately improve the understanding of the effects of hypercapnia in patients with POTS and will provide robust evidence to support or reject the development of novel gas trapping devices for the management of POTS.
When asked about being a CHAT member, Shaun said, “Becoming a member of CHAT has allowed me to gain extensive knowledge and invaluable research skills that has been instrumental to my goal in advancing cardiovascular research. CANet has provided me with opportunities to converse with like-minded colleagues/experts, providing me with networking opportunities and by allowing me to take part in events/conferences and competitions that will strengthen my research and career development. The benefits of becoming a CHAT member have been considerable and I am very pleased with everything it has offered me. Being a member of CHAT has not only improved my skills and knowledge in the research areas I am interested in but overall improved who I am as a person, a student, and a researcher by providing me with various resources and opportunities of personal growth.”
